The Dr. L.J. Twyner Memorial Scholarship fund was established to honor the memory of Dr. L.J. Twyner by his daughter, Dr. Kathleen Twyner-Coley and family. Dr. L.J. Twyner was a dentist in Davenport, Iowa for more than 40 years and an active member of his community. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, from which he received an award for outstanding community service in 1977. He was honored in 1989 by United Neighbors Inc. for his many years of service to the community as a member of the Davenport School Board. In November of 1990, he received an award and special thanks from the Davenport Education Association for his commitment to Davenport public schools. He served on the Iowa Civil Rights Commission in the mid-1970s and also received honorary recognition from both the League of Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, and the Davenport Chamber of Commerce. The Dr. L.J. Twyner Memorial Scholarship will honor his life and seek to help support others who want to pursue a higher education career in dentistry.
